Brett White on Coding and Community at Raspberry Jam
In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I sit down with Brett White, founder of the Raspberry Jam, along with my sons, Ray and Clark, who attended last year. We are at the Providence Insurance Agency in South Charleston, one of the sponsors for the upcoming event alongside BizSolutions.Tech.
Brett explains that the Raspberry Jam is a beginner-friendly event for anyone interested in coding, IT, or computer science. It provides hands-on opportunities to work with Raspberry Pi computers and connect with others in the local tech community. The event is set for March 15, 2025, at the University of Charleston’s Geary Student Union Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Ray and Clark share their experiences from last year’s event. Ray enjoyed programming games, and Clark liked the various interactive exhibits, especially a light-up pin. Brett emphasizes that programming often involves trial and error, but troubleshooting is part of the learning process.
Clark discusses what he has learned about electricity, noting its importance in powering the devices used at the event. Ray recalls different activities, including a computer that answered questions, interactive games, and, of course, donuts.
When asked about improvements for next year, Clark suggests adding more games, and Ray proposes a station where kids can build their own circuits. Brett responds by announcing the addition of Little Bits, a hands-on electronics kit that uses magnets for easy assembly.
Brett outlines activities for this year, including Minecraft programming, building a working stoplight in Python, and creating interactive websites. He also hints at new surprises for attendees.
Ray and Clark agree that anyone interested in computers or science should attend. Brett confirms the event details, and I remind listeners to check the description for more information. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Raspberry Jam.
