Saving Lives Through Awareness With Amanda Farley

In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I chat with Amanda Farley at Meet-Up 64 to talk about her work in mental health and suicide prevention. She shares that her focus is on keeping West Virginians safe by addressing mental health openly.

She explains that suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10 to 34 in West Virginia and that the state ranks 12th nationally in suicide death rates. Her organization works to raise awareness, provide education, and advocate for policies to support mental health resources.

Amanda talks about common misconceptions, such as the belief that suicide is caused by a single event. She explains that it is often a combination of mental health struggles and life circumstances. Many people suffering do not openly express their pain, making it crucial to recognize warning signs and offer support.

She introduces her organization, the West Virginia chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. They provide education across age groups, advocate for mental health policies, and organize community events like the Out of the Darkness walks. She also highlights the 988 Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a simple three-digit number for those in crisis.

Her work focuses on reducing stigma and creating safe spaces for people to talk about their struggles. She encourages volunteers to get involved and help spread awareness.
