Bob Theuring on The Key to Long-Term Business Success
In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I was with Theuring to talk about his work in coaching and training. Bob started his company in 2005, focusing on helping people maximize their potential. He calls it success coaching, life coaching, or business coaching, depending on the need. His goal is to help people rekindle their drive or strengthen their motivation to reach their full potential.
Bob talks about the impact of “I know” statements. He explains that when people assume they already know an outcome, they shut themselves off from possibilities. If someone says, “I know this client won’t be interested,” they may not make the call or approach the conversation with the right mindset. Bob believes that dropping “I know” statements allows for imagination, learning, and openness to new opportunities.
I ask Bob about other challenges he helps clients overcome. He works with people who want to improve their creativity, impact, or income. When he asks them what they truly want, many struggle to answer because they haven’t taken the time to think about it. He compares people’s default behaviors to the preset settings on a phone—many accept what is given rather than customizing their lives to fit what they really want.
Bob also addresses the excuse of not having time. He believes time is about priorities. Everyone has the same 24 hours, but people let their days be controlled by default patterns. He challenges clients to take control of their schedules instead of reacting to external demands.
We discuss hustle, and I share that I see it as being productive, not just busy. Bob relates hustle to baseball, thinking of Pete Rose’s nickname, Charlie Hustle. He notes that while Rose played hard, he also had structured practice routines. Bob emphasizes that people need to balance effort with focused preparation to avoid burnout.
