Building Relationships and Referrals with Melissa Pemberton

In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I talk with Melissa Pemberton, a copier and printer specialist who focuses on building strong relationships. Melissa shares some exciting news about the BNI chapters in Charleston. Currently, there are three chapters, including a virtual group, a hybrid group that I’m a part of, and a new chapter called Wealth Builder$, which is planning a big Visitors Day on November 6th.

BNI, or Business Networking International, is all about relationships, referrals, and accountability. Melissa explains how referrals are more than just leads—they’re warm introductions where the person is expecting your call and willing to take an appointment. In BNI, it’s crucial to follow up on referrals to build trust and relationships.

Melissa highlights BNI’s core principle, “Givers Gain,” which is all about helping others succeed. By focusing on giving, whether personally or professionally, you open the door to receive help in return. This mindset is a key part of building relationships within the BNI network.

Each BNI chapter has a specific seat for different business professionals, ensuring no competition within the group. Members aren’t trying to sell to the chapter—they’re educating fellow members so that each person becomes a referral source.

As we wrap up, Melissa talks about her involvement in BNI and a couple of cruises she’s attended with Dr. Ivan Meissner, BNI’s founder. We also discuss the upcoming visitors’ day for the Wealth Builder$ chapter. Melissa encourages people interested in giving and building relationships to attend.

Lastly, Melissa thanks Chris and Kelly from Embassy Suites for hosting the Wealth Builder$ meetings in downtown Charleston, where parking is convenient, and the venue is excellent. She invites anyone who believes in giving to join on November 6th.
