Mark Wray on Matching Travelers and Businesses

In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I talk with Mark Wray to talk about Travelese, a travel platform built to match travelers and businesses with more precision. He describes it as a mix of streaming discovery and one-to-one matching. The goal is to move past spray-and-pray marketing and help businesses reach people who are a better fit.

Mark got into this after years in web and marketing, where he kept seeing weak results from broad outreach. He spent years thinking through a better model. Now his team is building a system around hundreds of data points from both travelers and businesses to improve customer acquisition and reduce wasted spend.

We also get into mistakes. Mark shares that one miss came close to launch, when they realized they had built the product without pricing in place. They had to go back, retrofit the system, and build out pricing structures before beta. That reset helped them tighten the business side before going live.

Another part of our conversation centers on trust. Mark talks about fake reviews, bad recommendations, and even travel listings that point people to places that are no longer open or never existed at all. His view is that both travelers and businesses are dealing with bad information, bad matches, and too much noise.

What stands out is his belief that the market does not need more random promotion. It needs better alignment. He sees a path to stronger conversion rates by connecting the right people with the right places. He also makes the case that entrepreneurs need to understand finance, legal basics, and compliance. Through all of it, he keeps coming back to one point: have faith in what you are building.
