Brett White on the Future of Tech Education in West Virginia and Raspberry Jam
In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I talk with Brett White at the Providence Insurance office in South Charleston. Brett is organizing the seventh annual Raspberry Jam, which will take place on March 15, 2025, at the University of Charleston in the Geary Student Union Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Raspberry Jam is focused on computer science and technology, centered around the Raspberry Pi, a small and affordable computer. Brett explains that the Raspberry Pi is a great tool for beginners to learn Linux, programming, and electronics. It has ports for connecting keyboards, mice, and monitors, making it a fully functional computer.
Brett shares that Raspberry Jams are held worldwide, but this is the only one in West Virginia. The event will provide opportunities to network with the growing tech community and introduce attendees to coding and hardware projects. It is designed for students, educators, and anyone interested in technology.
Attendees can drop in at any time during the event, whether they want to stay for an hour or the entire session. There will be new classes this year, including a session on creating a website using a Raspberry Pi and another on building a game similar to Operation.
Brett highlights some of the prizes available, including a Raspberry Pi 500, three full-size Raspberry Pi kits, a portable Raspberry Pi 02W kit, a Makey Makey controller kit, and a Creality Ender 3 V3 3D printer. Sponsors have contributed keyboards, mice, and monitors so winners can start using their new devices immediately.
The event is open to all ages, but it is especially beneficial for students interested in technology. Brett encourages parents to bring their children and explore the opportunities available in coding and electronics. The Raspberry Jam is happening at the University of Charleston on March 15, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Links for registration and additional details will be provided. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. https://lu.ma/vd6agtgv
