Carly Chapman on Passion, Growth, and Thoughtful Design
In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I talk with Carly Chapman, the Director of Interior Design at ZMM Architects and Engineers. Carly shares her journey, the growth of her firm, and her passion for interior design.
ZMM is a firm that specializes in a wide range of projects, from hospital and corporate design to K-12 schools, which she notes is a particular focus for them. Carly explains that architects make a building stand, but interior designers make people love being in it. Her team focuses on creating spaces that shape the daily lives of the people who use them.
We discuss the resurgence of 70s design, with Carly noting the importance of incorporating lessons learned from the past into their work. She also touches on a major shift at ZMM, where they transitioned from a board of directors to a leadership team representing various specialties, including K-12, higher education, and hospitality. This change comes as the firm grows, with their team expanding from 35 to over 70 employees and offices now in Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Carly attributes their success to the quality of their work and a focus on design that prioritizes how a space feels and functions for its users. Her passion for her role and dedication to ZMM’s mission stand out throughout our conversation.
As we wrap up, Carly reflects on her journey, crediting tenacity and a love for her work as keys to her success. She’s excited about ZMM’s continued expansion and impact.
