Joey Stepp on Comedy, Magic, and Success

In this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast, I chat with Joey Stepp, a comedy magician who combines humor and illusions to entertain audiences of all ages. Joey’s hustle is performing magic and motivational shows at events ranging from small birthday parties to large corporate conferences across the state and beyond. On Friday, January 24th, he’s performing at the Marshall Hall of Fame Café. Joey invites everyone to learn more at his website, JoeyStepp.com

Joey shares that his journey into magic began while bartending in college. Starting with simple tricks like making bottle caps disappear, he found joy in blending magic with comedy. The magic tricks gave him confidence on stage, allowing him to make people laugh and have a great time. Over time, his childhood passion evolved into a thriving side hustle.

Balancing his work in the school system with his performances, Joey dedicates time to learning new tricks and handling the business side of his craft. From managing invoices and scheduling to communicating effectively with clients, he emphasizes the importance of staying organized and maintaining professionalism. The accessibility of platforms like YouTube has also made learning new tricks easier, although Joey admits most of his time is now spent on logistics.

When asked about his upcoming show, Joey describes it as a mix of comedy and magic, promising laughs and amazement. Performing an average of ten shows a month, his schedule includes everything from corporate holiday parties to intimate family gatherings. December, in particular, is a busy month, with gigs ranging from comedy clubs to private dinners.

Joey’s influences include British comedy magician John Archer, but much of his style is self-taught. He encourages aspiring hustlers to focus on their ideas, avoid naysayers, and commit fully to their passions. As Joey puts it, success comes from listening to those who’ve walked the path and deciding for yourself when something is or isn’t working.

We wrap up with Joey’s advice for anyone considering starting a side hustle: follow your passion, work hard, and trust your instincts.
