Championing Local Growth: A Conversation with Ashley Alford Glance

I am thrilled to be sitting down with Ashley Alford Glance, the president of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, for this episode of the Kanawha Valley Hustlers podcast. Ashley, or as many people fondly refer to her, “Ashley at the Chamber,” wears multiple hats in her role, but at its core, her hustle is all about serving the 500 plus members of the Chamber.

In Putnam County, we are experiencing significant growth, both in population and businesses. Ashley attributes this growth to the area’s excellent school system and its proximity to larger cities. As the president of the Chamber, Ashley’s job has become busier, thanks to the influx of new businesses. In fact, the Chamber has been celebrating numerous ribbon cuttings, often having several in a single day. The excitement is palpable.

One remarkable initiative that Ashley is passionate about is Shop Small Saturday, an annual event after Thanksgiving. It’s a day dedicated to supporting local businesses, and Putnam County fully embraces this opportunity. The Chamber partners with American Express to encourage everyone to shop small, not just on that specific day, but throughout the holiday season and beyond. Putnam County may not have big malls, but it boasts an array of entrepreneurs, artisans, and specialty stores that offer everything you need, from stylish clothing to locally made jewelry and pottery.

The community spirit is strong in Putnam County, and the Chamber plays a pivotal role in fostering connections among its members. Events like networking opportunities and the grand Annual Dinner, held at the end of January, bring together local businesses and individuals. During the Annual Dinner, the Chamber recognizes outstanding community service and achievements, making it a night of celebration and recognition.
